El nombre de Piano proviene del término italiano "piano", que significa “suave” también es conocido como pianoforte en referencia a su facilidad para ejecutar matices suaves y fuertes. Es un instrumento universal, característico por sus teclas blancas y negras, es de cuerdas percutidas, armónico y de gran extensión. Fue inventado alrededor del siglo XVIII por el italiano Bartolomeo Cristofori.
